"Skewing your center of gravity may feel unnatural at first, but it can also bring you new perspective. As you perform inversions, you will grow more confident—physically and mentally."
INVERSIONS 🙃 Yes you will invert, or go upside down! Yes, it may seem scary to look at, but YOU CAN DO IT, everyone can do it! (With a few exceptions... see below) An inversion is any pose where your head is below your heart and applies the principle of being flipped upside down. They are thought to be the King & Queen of all yoga poses, or Asana; not just for their amazing health benefits but because they are challenging, dramatic, exhilarating, & are defined by "overcoming fears." Traditional inversions include Sirsasana (Headstand), Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand), restorative poses such as Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose), and even Downward facing-dog.
These inverted poses are the most important, or King & Queen, not only because they are the most beneficial, but also because they are the hardest to maintain for the optimal time to receive such benefits.
ENTER...AERIAL YOGA! Aerial Yoga allows you to actually maintain these vital poses for the substantial length of time with no discomfort/overuse in the shoulders, neck, arms, & head. In fact, the swing, once worked with a few times, is extremely comfortable! History continues to be re-written & aerial yoga is going down in the books i tell ya!!!
SOOO MANYYYY Benefits of Aerial Yoga...
Yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar believes that inversions allow the body to purge impurities, which facilitates strength, firmness, calmness and clarity of mind. Also in yoga, Ayurveda promotes the regular practice of inversions based upon the theoretical concept that many of the impurities in our body are held in the lower abdominal area. When you invert the body and raise your feet above your head, you allow gravity to move these impurities towards our agni (fire), which is located in our digestive tract (just above our lower abdomen). By allowing these impurities (which were previously stuck) to move to your agni (which will burn them off), you’ll be able to breathe deeper and improve your health.
In yoga, the benefits of inversions are based on the principles of opposite process and the concept that inversions provide a way of looking at the world from a different physical viewpoint to facilitate a different perspective. Inversions alter the flow of cerebral spinal fluid, and allow blood to drain from the lower body to allow fresh blood to cycle throughout the tissues and organs of the body. There are numerous benefits to a regular inversion practice!!!...
RELIEVE BACK PAIN & EASES STRESS... Decompresses the spine through gentle traction. Relaxes muscles & re-hydrates discs, realigns & reduces pressure, while releasing tension in shoulders, neck & back.
INCREASE FLEXIBILITY, IMPROVE FITNESS, AND BUILD CORE STRENGTH... Inverted exercises help build a strong core, which is essential to back health.
GLOWING SKIN... Reversing gravity flushes fresh nutrients and oxygen to the face, stimulates the facial capillaries and hair follicles of the scalp, and helps remove visual signs of toxicity (including acne), giving your skin a natural “face lift” and healthy glow.
NATURAL FACE-LIFT... Besides forming a more toned body, certain poses can even have age-defying effects. Not that beauty benefits should be the reason for your practice, but it’s certainly a nice perk. Aerial Yoga is a safe and effective way to produce a natural face-lift, and other youth-giving properties. Think about it...While you’re hanging out upside down, you are essentially reversing the powers of gravity on your body. Hanging upside down allows fresh oxygenated blood to circulate to your face and neck which helps relax the muscles, and over time can reduce signs of aging, such as wrinkles and sagging skin. They also make the spine more flexible, which helps slow the aging process.
NATURAL ANTI-DEPRESSANT... Inversions literally turn your frown upside down. Flushing the adrenal glands stimulates the release of neurotransmitters and endorphin that allow you to immediately feel uplifted and can counteract depression, mood swings and seasonal effective disorder. Inversions stimulates the the pituitary gland, the gland responsible for mood enhancement; and the parasympathetic nervous system, which produces feelings of relaxation and calmness. The release of "Happy Hormones." These include serotonin and endorphins. These elevate mood and just make you feel lighter and happier. An increase of self-esteem through trusting your hammock and working the process of conquering basic fears.
BOOST BRAIN FUNCTIONING... When the brain lacks a sufficient supply of blood, the body becomes slow and sluggish because the brain uses 25 percent of the body’s oxygen. Increasing blood flow nourishes brain cells with more oxygen resulting in improved concentration, memory and awareness.
AIDS IN DIGESTION... When you invert your body you allow the stool that is moving from the ileocecal valve through the ascending colon to move with the force of gravity. The pressing of the stool against the intestinal walls also encourages movement and the pressure on the walls of the digestive tract stimulates a stronger peristalsis (muscle contractions that occur in your digestive tract).
IMPROVES IMMUNITY... Inversions help to stimulate lymphatic cleansing and drainage which clears toxins from the tissues and plays a vital role in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the immune system.
PROMOTES SOUNDER SLEEP & AIDS IN INSOMNIA... A study conducted by LJ Nose found that EMG activity (a measure of muscle tension) declined by more than 35 percent within 10 seconds of inverting. Muscle tension can contribute to feelings of anxiety as well as insomnia so it’s important to flush it from your body.
Changing your perspective can change everything, and sometimes it’s just a matter of literally turning things upside-down! Learn to be more present through mindful consciousness while creating a deeper state of inner awareness.
